Artist Statement

Unapologetic and daring, Jojo Lewis is a multimedia artist who challenges the patriarchal society in the western world she lives in. Using Feminist ideology, to convey her perspective, she believes the message of her art is more important than the form, allowing her to create a range of works from assertive performances, like her ‘Slut Walk’, installations using unnerving facts, like ‘The Dress’ or mocking the absurdity of patriarchy, with its power status and canons, in '#NotAllExhibitions'. Her activist style, inspired by artists such as Tracey Emin and Pussy Riot, questions the beliefs of the viewer and creates conversations around her subject matter, the oppression of women. Using her experience as a woman, her art reflects her personal, never ending, journey of becoming a feminist activist. Through doing so, she wishes to make a positive impact on the world; constantly creating discourses to break down norms.

"I wish to give a voice to those who may not be heard. To raise them to powerful and public spaces, such as gallery walls, where they can be seen. I acknowledge my privileges and wish to empower and create positive impacts on society through my artwork and supporting charities." Jojo Lewis

Art is art when it exists for discourses and practices that recognize it as art value and evaluate it as art, and consume it as art, whether as object, gesture, representation, or only idea” Andrea Fraser (2005)
